It’s a phrase that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. It also is the only phrase to accurately describe the effort and outcome of a game where fans can feel good about what’s ahead for this year’s Clark Cougar varsity squad. Despite their “48 minutes to play, a lifetime to remember” attitude , Clark fell short to Churchill in the 2012 Gucci Bowl, 29-36.
A strong start by the Cougars showed why this season has playoff potential.
The Cougars took the opening kickoff and the o-line started blowing holes open. Brandon Valle scored on a 23 yd. rushing TD down the left side with 1:41 burned off the clock. The opening drive of 5 plays and 76 yds gave Clark a 6-0 lead. Churchill then scored making it 6-7. On their 2nd possession, Presley Miller had a reception for 35 yds. and Brandon Valle once again bolted for 24 yds. for his 2nd TD of the night. The Cougars led 12-7. Churchill took the lead with another TD making it 12-14 and a bad snap on a Clark punt for a safety made it 12-16 at the end of the 1st. (continue reading…)
It’s finally here. Clark Cougar football fans have been waiting for a long, hot summer and the hard work and off season workouts are about to pay off. If you do a search on YouTube, there’s a number of Gucci Bowl related videos but none more classic than this 1991 Clark Pep Rally. Thanks to our friends at @mysahighschools for pointing this out. By the way, Clark won this game 41-7.
The Clark Cougar volleyball team, led by Kelly Cavanaugh’s 32 assists, whipped the Taft Raiders in district action, sweeping them 3-0 at Paul Taylor. Cavanaugh also had 2 service aces and 15 digs in the match. Meagan Moe and Katie Mattson pounded the Raiders with 12 kills each and Madison Woods kept the offense going with 19 digs.
The Cougars are now 2-1 in District 27-5A. They next play Friday in the Smithson Valley tournament. Great job, Coogs!
As expected, the 2012 San Antonio football season couldn’t start without a televised Gucci Bowl and KSAT’s over-the-air digital channel 12.2 will carry the game. KSAT announced today that the game can be seen on Channel 12.2 (which can be picked up with a cheap antennae) , on Time Warner cable 81, on GVTC channel 81 and Grand communications’ channel 271.
For the 29th time, Clark and Churchill will meet in the annual Gucci Bowl, the kickoff to the San Antonio High School football season. The Chargers will be trying to pull a “hat trick”, winning for three years in a row while Clark will try to put an end to opening season losses for the past two years. Both teams are starting new quarterbacks after losing players to graduation (Clark) and a family move (Churchill). The Chargers return 31 players, 6 who started. The Cougars return 12 players from last year’s 4-6 team, 6 who started for Coach Steven McGhee. This year’s game is 7pm at Comalander Stadium in the Blossom Athletic Complex (map).
- This is the 29th Gucci Bowl. The teams have met 30 times however. Besides the Gucci Bowl, Clark and Churchill also faced each other in the playoffs in 1987, 1993 and 1994.
- Clark leads the all time record 15-14-2 and the Gucci Bowl record 14-12-2
- A Churchill win this year would give both teams a “three-peat” in the series. Clark won the Gucci Bowl ’94-’95-’96
From ClarkCougarSports.com to all of our student athletes, have a great year, a great season, and thanks for your efforts in the class and on the field. And take a moment to read this. GO COOGS!
One of the fastest distance runners in San Antonio and possibly the state helped pace the Clark Cougars to a good showing at the NISD cross country meet. Austin Wells, picked by many as a top five cross country athlete, took 1st place in the first meet of the season and helped lead a strong boys team to a 2nd place finish. For the ladies, Frances Moore led all Cougar runners and helped the Coogs to a fifth place invitational finish.
Here are the final times and find the meet results here:
