#14 C. Miller strips ball for Clark points

In a game that looked eerily like last year, the Clark Cougars varsity football team lost to the brandees broncos, 34-20.  The Cougars started the 1st half strong, capitalizing on brandees mistakes for points but created their own mistakes in the 2nd half to go home without a “W”.  Again, the Cougars looked improved from the game before, looking stronger as they get into the heart of district playoff positioning.

 1st Quarter

The Cougars started the game with a three and out possession but a brandees fumble on the punt gave Clark an opportunity in the red zone on the 20 yd. line.  On 2nd down and 23, Josh Kern found Brandon Yates for 22 yds.  On the next play, Kweku Larbie punched it in for the score.  Cougars 7 – brandees 0.  Following the kickoff, the broncos could have been renamed the butterfingers as they fumbled the first three snaps burying them deep in their own territory.  The last was caused by Chris Miller and recovered by ? setting up the Cougars on the 15 yd. line. Ty Williams hit a 26 yd. field goal to give the Cougars a 10-0 lead with 5:24 left in the 1st half.  The “my little ponies” finally put points on the board to end the first half Clark 10, brandees 7.

2nd Quarter

The Cougars put three more points on the board after Ty Willimas hit a 37 yd. field goal set up by a big run by Josh Kern, giving the Cougars a 13-7 advantage. The Clark defense once again held brandees to a non-scoring possession.  The final Cougar drive of the half included a nice 9 yd. reception by Alex Hunter and another run by Kern for 13 yds. to the 17 yd. line.  On 4th and inches from the goal line, however, a Clark fumble ended the half.

3rd Quarter

On the first play of the 2nd half, brandees running back Trinton Ynclan broke free for 62 yds. making it 13-14.  The Cougars followed that with a three and out possession but a great punt by Kern put brandees on their own 33.  Another run by Ynclan gave brandees a 13-20 lead.   A brandees QB sneak for 19 yds. made it Clark 13-them 27 .  Kern and Yates then turned around a with a 15 yd. TD with 1:57 left in the third making it a 20-27 game.

4th Quarter

A Clark fumble set brandees up on the Clark 26 and they cashed that in for another TD making the final score 20-34.  the my little ponies had one more opportunity to score but a determined Clark defense stuffed them 4 times at the goal line, denying them the point and giving Clark a chance to make  a very late comeback.

Clark is now 2-1 in District 27-5A and still has a great shot o do some damage in the district race for playoffs.  Next up is a tough Jay team.
