Congratulations to the Clark Cougars girls varsity basketball team for winning their first round playoff game vs. Corpus Christi Carroll. The Cougars, using the same high paced offense that put them in the playoffs, won 81-47. Mercedes Orozco hung 18 on Carroll while Kirsten Kramer added another 15 points. D’onna Matthews and Kristen Lye added 10 each.
A 24-8 1st qtr. set the pace for the game and the Coogs never looked back.
WAY TO GO COOGS!
Gearing up for the playoffs, the Clark Cougars girls varsity basketball team took one step closer to securing a playoff spot by beating Marshall 81-57. With two games left in the season, the wheels would have to come off for Clark to miss the post-season.
Like most of the Cougars wins, it was a track meet, with fast breaks and lots of scoring – and lots of Cougars scoring. It was the third time this year the Cougars topped 80 points. Consistent 3 point shooting and a rebound and run to the basket offense kept the Rams on their heels all night. Kirsten Kramer, Trei Torain and Mercedes Orozco led the scoring but certainly weren’t the only ones racking up points in the boxscore. Coach Richard Herbst was able to play most if not all of the team without an offensive letdown in the victory.
The Clark boys cranked up the offense on Tuesday in an 82-58 win over Marshall. Shawn Gulley led the scoring with 24 and Jorden Kite was right behind him with 23. Also contributing were Justin Brickman (17), Nathan Josephs (6), Ruben Garcia (5), Marcus Hawkins (4 ) and Scotty Carl (3).
Up next is Holmes on Friday at 6:30 at Paul Taylor.
Go get ‘em Coogs!
Congratulations to the Clark Cougars girls varsity basketball team, who cracked the Express News Top Ten for the first time this season. With a 20-10 record, the Cougars are currently headed to the playoffs with three games left in the regular season. The next one is Wednesday vs. Marshall at Paul Taylor at 8pm
The Express News also named Clark’s boys soccer team the number one team in their rankings this week. They are currently undefeated in District 27-5A but face a tough test today vs. Taft at Farris at 5pm.
WAY TO GO COOGS!
Congrats to Jason Brickman, named as one of the best assist men in the country according to Jay Bilas of ESPN.
The Clark girls basketball team got a big district win over Brandeis on Wednesday defeating the broncos 48-44. It was not as large as the Cougar’s 64-50 win earlier in the season, but strategically important as playoffs near. D’onna Matthews led Clark with 10 points, followed closely by Trei Torain’s 9 points. Also scoring were Gabby Aguilar (7), Alejandra Esparza (6), Kirsten Kramer (5), Ria Gulley (5), Sarah Flournoy (3) and Mercedes Orozco (3).
Clark is 20-9 this season and 8-4 in district play. They are in 4th place in the standings just behind 9-4 Brandeis with 4 games remaining and 5th place Marshall just two games behind.
Up next is a big game against Jay at 7:30 on Friday in the O’Connor gym. Jay is undefeated in district play.
The Clark boys, in the middle of a tough season, will also be at OC on Friday taking on Jay at 6:00.
Get out and support your Cougars!
Early in the season, Coach Richard Herbst knew the Clark Cougars girls basketball team had real potential. He was right. The Cougars defeated O’Connor 56-32 for their 6th district win of the season and their 7th win out of the last eight games played. The victory also avenged an early season loss to the Panthers and gives the Cougars a solid 3rd place standing in the district race with the 2nd half of the season underway.
D’onna Matthews, Gabby Aquilar and Kristen Kramer led the Cougars offensively in the win. Defensively, the Cougars held O’Connor to three periods of single digit scoring. The Cougars next take on Stevens, currently 2nd in district, Friday evening at Paul Taylor at 7pm.
Great Job, Ladies! Keep it up.
The Clark Cougars girls varsity defeated the #9 Brandeis Broncos for their second district win of the season 64-50. The Cougar led after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead, including a 3rd quarter where the Broncos were held to 9 points. D’onna Matthews and Kristen Kramer led the Cougars with 18 pts. each. The Cougars are now 16-5 on the year and 2-2 in district play.
It was also another win for Coach Richard Herbst, who crossed the 600th milestone last week. You can read more about his career and the success he’s having at Clark in this Express News article.
Congratulations, Coach and to your Cougars!
The boys and girls varsity basketball teams DESTROYED the Lee Volunteers in non-district action. The girls started the evening with a 74-24 whipping with Kristen Lye, D’onna Matthews and Kristen Kramer providing the offensive firepower. The Cougars are now 9-3 on the season.
The boys followed up with a 66-23 victory. Justin Brickman and Shawn Gulley put up double digits on the scoreboard in the win.
WAY TO GO, COOGS!
