Jones leads Cougars to victory

Following a tough outing against Alamo Heights, the Clark Cougar defense stepped up and shut down a Taft offense that scored 35 points the week before, giving Clark a 10-0 win over the Raiders.

The first quarter ended 0-0 with the Cougars driving and Deandre Holmes converting a 4th and 1 with :33 seconds to go.  The drive would continue into  the 2nd quarter but stalled.

With 6:27 left in the half, Josh Kern set up the Cougars first score of the evening with a 42 yd. bootleg run giving the Cougars the ball on the 6 yd. line.  Webb Williams made a 26 yd. field goal giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead at the half.

The 2nd half began the same way as the first half went for Taft – with three plays and a punt.  Peter Rozanski had a tackle for a loss on second down of the Taft possession to put them in a hole.

The Cougars and Raiders traded possessions.  When Taft got the ball back late in the 3rd quarter, it would be the first time they were in Clark territory.  Kris Patino made sure they didn’t get any further, sacking the quarterback for a six yard loss and setting up another Taft punt.

The Cougars sealed the game on the next series of downs.  Josh Kern found Brandon Yates for 14 yards and when the Cougars reached the Taft 33,  Ryan Jones found the end zone with 8:18 on the clock for a Cougar TD. He would end the night with 94 yards rushing.

The defense continued their dominance on the next series, including an Evan Meyer tackle for a loss and passing attempt that was knocked down by Mekeba Henderson.  The defense held Taft to 96 total yards to Clark’s 297. The Cougars sit atop District 27-5A (by virtue of the fact it’s the first district game…but facts are facts…).

Way to go Coogs!
