A new head coach, two new quarterbacks and the 30th meeting between two of San Antonio’s perennial football powers makes for another classic as the 27th annual Gucci Bowl is hours away from kickoff.
1996 was the last time a team won the matchup three times in a row and that’s exactly what Clark will try to repeat at Heroes Stadium as the two teams meet. Clark is coming off its best two year run in school history with a 26-3 record while Churchill tries for their first winning season in the past 4 years. Both teams will be led by new quarterbacks. Clark looks to start junior QB Josh Kern while Churchill looks to give the team to William Huguley (a junior QB as well) and not Sr. QB Warren Truesdale, who the Express News named as a player to watch in District 26-5A. Rumor has it Huguley went 10 for 10 in a scrimmage against New Braunfels Canyon (who went 4-6 in 2009).
Clark’s new head coach Steve McGhee will lead the Cougars while second year coach Glenn Hill, Jr. will guide the Chargers. The Express News has picked Clark to win the game. SA Communities reporter Pat Turner talked with McGhee about the big game in this report.

- This is the 27th Gucci Bowl. The teams have met 30 times however. Besides the Gucci Bowl, Clark and Churchill also faced each other in the playoffs in 1987, 1993 and 1994.
- Clark leads the all time record 15-12-2 and the Gucci Bowl record 14-10-2
- Clark head coach Steven McGhee played for Clark and was an All State tight end who received a scholarship to UT
- McGhee is only the 4th head coach for Clark

I know the Gucci Bowl started 27 years or so ago, and was wondering how it got its name and who named it the Gucci Bowl. Thanks

We’re not sure how it got it’s name. The common wisdom is that the local media named it that, not the schools or players.

I’m almost certain it got it’s name from the fact that these two school used and still are two of the more well endowed schools, i.e. Alamo Heights. So when they met the named they named it the Gucci bowl, after the high class, expense designer because these schools were synonymous for being wealthy.

Im sorry it started put with Alamo heights and Churchill, they were the more wealthy schools but Alamo heights was replaced by Clark
