Menezes steals one

After a week off the gridiron, the Clark Cougar football team came roaring back, demolishing the Holmes Huskies 56-27 in a homecoming victory.  The win keeps the Cougars in the playoff hunt with a must-win game against O’Connor next week.

Holmes’ first possession ended early when they were stopped on a 4th and 8 attempt from the Clark 37 yd. line.  The Cougars drove to the five where Deandre Holmes scored giving the Cougars a 7-0 lead.  The Cougars’ second score came after a 4th and 2 effort by the Huskies.  On the next play, Josh Kern bullied his way for 37 yds. for a 14-0 lead.  And once again, the Huskies were stopped on a 4th down attempt.  Hunter Anderson pounded his way to the end zone giving Clark a 21-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

The 2nd quarter wasn’t much better for the Huskies.  Manny Menezes picked off a Holmes pass, returning the ball for 36 yds., setting up a Kern to Ansley Benjamin 12 yd. TD reception.  The score came with 14 seconds off the clock at the start of the quarter.  The final Cougar score of the half  came when Josh Kern ran for his second TD at the 4:18 mark.  Holmes would score with :35 seconds left before the half.  The teams went to the locker room with Clark up 35-7 at the half.

COUGARS UNLOAD ON RAMS

by on Sep.17, 2010, under Football

Jones shreds the Marshall "D"

It was another lopsided defeat by the Clark Cougars varsity football team over the Marshall Rams in a 49-7 beat down at Farris Stadium.  Coach Steve McGhee made sure several reserve players saw action in the second half and they scored 14 points and kept the Rams to 2 total rushing yards for the half.

Among the highlights:

  • Ryan Jones’ prolific night rushing
  • Deandre Holmes 2 TDs
  • Josh Kern to Austin Wise – twice –  one for TD
  • Kern to Jeremy Harris setting up a score
  • A STIFLING defensive effort including two fumble recoveries
  • Alex Ethridge and Brian Socha TDs
  • Ansley Benjamin LIGHTING UP a Ram returner

There’s more to say but Pat Turner of the Express News covers it all here.

WAY TO PLAY COOGS!

’09 WINS IN ’10

Holmes scores and runs for 100+

A much improved Clark Cougar varsity football team scored often but had trouble stopping an Alamo Heights air attack, losing to the Mules 33-29.  The Cougars are now 0-2 as they prepare for a district opener against Taft.

Alamo Heights struck first with a FG and then added 7 more points with 7 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 9-0 lead in what appeared to be the end of the quarter.  Momentum, however, jumped to Clark’s side as Ryan Jones ended the 1st quarter with a 94 yard kickoff return.  Going into the 2nd quarter, the score was 9-7 Alamo Heights.

The second quarter belonged to the Cougars, who scored two touchdowns but gave up another field goal and TD , the latter coming moments before halftime.  Ryan Jones once again found the end zone and Deandre Holmes scored his first varsity TD with 1:43 left in the half. The Cougars went to the locker room with a 22-19 advantage.

CLARK JV FOOTBALL POUNDS PANTHERS

Socha scores, Guido and O-line make it easy for him

Socha scores; Guido, O-line make it easy for him

Scores by both the offense and defense helped give the Clark Cougar JV football team another victory, this time against the O’Connor Panthers. Brian Socha started the scoring, shredding the defense the length of the field before taking it in for a 4 yd. rushing TD.
On the defensive side of the ball, Chris Miller scooped up a Panther fumble and returned it for 52 yds. for a TD. Deandre Holmes added another rushing TD in the third quarter and Socha added a 61 yd. burst through the heart of the O’Connor defense for the final score in the 4th quarter. Tri-rice Van Buren must be mentioned for his acrobatic one handed reception that helped set up Holmes’ TD. The final for the 6-1 Cougars: 26-8. O’Connor’s lone touchdown came in the final 11 seconds of the game.
The sophomore team blanked the Panthers and remain undefeated. Their score was 26-0.

CLARK JV FOOTBALL ROLLS JAY

Alex Nichols returns kickoff for TD

Alex Nichols returns kickoff for TD

In one of the stranger games of the season, the Clark Cougar JV football whipped the John Jay Mustangs, 28-12.  The first half was relatively calm, as both teams turned the ball over, defense dominated and Jay was able to put together a drive ending in a TD with a failed extra point.  At the half, Jay led 6-0.

Then there was the second half.

Clark received the kickoff and returned it to midfield.  On the following play, Austin Wise pulled in a Sean Campbell pass and would rumble for a 30 yd. gain to the Jay 23.  Deandre Holmes would then find the end zone for the score and a Ty Williams PAT would give the Cougars a 7-6 lead early in the 3rd quarter.  On the next Jay possession, Renee Quintanilla would recover a fumble.  After three quarters, Clark would lead 7-6.

MUDBOWL ’09: CLARK JV SOILS BRANDEIS

Holmes shows Bronco who's the chief

Holmes shows Bronco who's the chief

Here’s all you need to know about the Clark Cougar JV victory over the Brandeis Broncos: sloppy conditions, sharp air and ground attack led by Sean Campbell and Austin Wise in the first half and Troy Ogletree and Deandre Holmes in the second half and a defense that dominated.

Following a torrential downpour, the Cougars came out of the locker room fired up and ready to win and that’s exactly what they did, 14-0.  The defense recorded two interceptions and several stops while Campbell connected with Wise for one TD and several completions.

The sophomore team also busted the Broncos.  Way to go COOGS!

CLARK WINS 27-0…AGAIN!

by on Aug.28, 2009, under Football

#12 QB Josh Kern fights through Churchill defense

#12 QB Josh Kern fights through Churchill defense

Following in the footsteps of the varsity, the Clark Cougar JV football team blanked the Churchill Chargers in a lightning shortened game 27-0.  A rushing TD with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter started the scoring blitz.  In the 2nd quarter, Sophomore QB Josh Kern hit Junior WR Jeremy Harris over 50 yards down field for what would be a 72 yard TD, giving the Cougars a 14-0 lead. Deandre Holmes made it 21-0 later that quarter on a nice rushing TD.  In a game full of highlights for the Cougars, including an offensive line blowing the defense off the ball and some nice running by Sophomore Kevin Neal, it was the defense who would score next.  A fumble recovery by #56 Aaron Benjamin, who rumbled, bumbled and stumbled his way for a good 60 yards after shedding at least 3 tackles, would end the scoring and guarantee the win for the Cougars.  Lightning in the area caused the officials to end it early…(or it was the mercy rule?).  The Clark sophomore team also won, beating the Chargers 6-0.  Congratulations to both teams.
